Remote Install Mac OS X is a remote installer for use with MacBook Air laptops over the network. It works by having it run on a Macintosh or a Windows-based PC with an optical drive and then connecting over the network to a client MacBook Air (lacking an optical drive) to perform system software installs.

Remote Install Mac OS X was released as part of Mac OS X 10.5.2 on February 12, 2008.

LogMeIn Rescue is an app that allows our technical support team to share screens and assist remotely by controlling the mouse and keyboard input. First, you will receive a link or a code to manually type into or http. Reboot your Mac. Hold down 'Option' on your keyboard once you hear the chime sound. Attach your bootable OS X Recovery Disk to your Mac and select it from the prompt list. Your Mac will launch into Recovery Mode and you can start fixing your Mac. If your Mac is running any version of OS X newer than 10.9 (Mavericks), you’re set to screen share. GoToMeeting also works great on PC, iOS and Android devices. Whichever system someone uses, they can see what you share from your Mac screen without issue.

Starting with the March 2009 version, the Mac Mini also supports Remote Install, allowing the DVD drive to be replaced with a second hard drive.

With the launch of Mac OS X Lion, Apple has omitted Remote Install.[1][2] A workaround is to enable Target Disk Mode.
