So I went ahead and installed Mac OS Big Sur on my mid-2015, 15-inch MacBook Pro. I’ve been messing around with it a bit here and there and while the new UI elements taking some getting used to, it feels more stable than I thought it would. I’m also surprised at the responsiveness, this beta version is running faster than the latest production version on Mac OS Catalina.

I’ve run across a couple of bugs here and there; the label for my clock widget says “City” instead of “Chicago” and the weather widget keeps defaulting back to Cupertino. I was able to reproduce an issue another blogger is seeing, but otherwise it’s a new coat of paint on the status quo. While users will instantly notice the new look and feel, they should still feel comfortable and confident when Big Sur is realized in the Fall.

I sold the Mac Mini I was using as a “BYOD”, or “Bring Your Own Device”, machine at work. Work has completely gone down the Microsoft path and have done their best to lock non-Windows machines out of the network. While my work as a developer that uses Linux (or other Unix platforms) all day long is still entrenched in a decidedly non-Windows environment, the work desktop team feels everyone in the company should be using Windows laptops. So I make do. I can deal and it’ll be nice to use the money from the sale of the Mac mini toward my next computer. I’m trying to decide if I want to try the full-time Linux leap or just embrace this aging MacBook Pro and iPad Pro combo I currently have going on.

I bought the Mac OS X Public beta which preceded 10.0, then paid the difference for that upgrade. Oh, so slow on a G3, don't think I fully made the switch until 10.2. Also, Apple had a free upgrade for 10.1, just had to swing by the then-new Apple Store to pick up a free CD.Donated all those original CD's to the local Mac user group along with the G3 a while back. Today marks the 20th anniversary of Mac OS X, the Mac operating system that changed everything. Arriving only a couple years after the first iMac, it helped forge Apple’s image as the king of cool — and changed computing forever. At the turn of the millennium, Apple was the talk of the tech world.

Oh well, there’s no need to rush while everything is working just fine.

In the meanwhile, I’ll see what other bugs in Big Sur I can find and provide feedback to Apple. If you’re not filling out bug reports, you’re doing the whole “beta software” thing wrong.

Surfshark is a newer VPN service with a lot to offer, at a very reasonable price. The Surfshark Mac OS VPN client did well in my tests. It is simple, user-friendly, and still offers lots of great features. You can select from the OpenVPN or IKEv2 VPN protocols in the settings. While it does not currently support the WireGuard VPN protocol, Surfshark plans to add this later in the year.

Surfshark is also one of the best VPNs for streaming. It consistently works with numerous Netflix libraries, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and more. Surfshark offers apps for all types of streaming devices, including Smart TVs. They even have an app in the Amazon store if you want to use a VPN with Firestick. While Surfshark offers more than enough speed for HD streaming, it is not quite as fast as NordVPN, as we found in our tests for the Surfshark vs NordVPN comparison.

4. VPN.ac for Mac OS

VPN.ac is another great Mac VPN that performs well in all categories – from security to speed and reliability. VPN.ac is run by a small team of network security professionals (Netsec Interactive Solutions). I found the Mac OS client to perform well in testing for the VPN.ac review: no leaks, bugs, or problems to report. The network speeds and reliability were also good, although not nearly as fast as ExpressVPN or NordVPN.

VPN.ac is mainly a privacy and security-focused VPN service. They offer some interesting features such as double-hop VPN configurations, various VPN encryption protocols, and secure proxy browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.

While these unique privacy features are great for some users, VPN.ac is not the best option for streaming and they do not offer live chat support. The main drawback with VPN.ac is that they keep basic connection logs for security purposes, but these are erased daily and never include browsing/activity logs.
